What to do in New Zealand?
Who can decide?! There are a million guides out there but which one to choose? Our heads got spinning when we decided on our New Zealand itinerary, but after spending 2 weeks in the Noth & South Island diving into awesome activities, we’d not change a thing on our itinerary.
So if you’ve got a vacation coming up in New Zealand. The first thing you’d do is buy a Lonely Planet guidebook. Next on the list, read our recommendations:) Then start googling, visit Tripadvisor, check out forums, and you’d be swarmed with an information overload! Then you’d realize… dang! there’s not enough time!
We got married and made the most brilliant decision to honeymoon in New Zealand - backpacker style. Armed with guidebooks, maps, the internet and a whole load of information, we planned our 18 days of amazing adventure. Here are some awesome moments we had in New Zealand. If you happen to go there, these are some of the must-dos! Click on the title and you can read more about specific experiences we had in NZ.
1. Sky Diving at Taupo
No words can describe the feeling of free falling. This was our honeymoon highlight! The view was absolutely breathtaking. Knock off your jitters and just let go!
2. Canoe down Wanganui River
First enjoy the winding journey to Pipiriki…then, experience serene and peaceful nature of the Wanganui River. Nature at its best.
3. Black Water Rafting down Waitomo Caves
Wooohooo! You’d be screaming your lungs out…and have your butt aching after that, but surely not to be missed. For the claustrophobic this is your big break, go for it.
4. Whale Watching at Kaikoura
Don’t pass this little town without watching whales, dolphins and seals! It’s a sea mammal throve!
5. Breakfast overlooking Mount Cook
Ever had breakfast overlooking snow capped mountains, with the warmth of a crackling fire and hot cuppa? Mount Cook’s a spectacular sight.
6. Bungee Jumping off Kawarau Bridge, Queenstown
New Zealand equals bungee jumping. Scream your lungs out leaping off the birthplace of this insane sport!
7. Hot water bath in Queenstown
Drive down a little to Arthur’s Point, Queenstown and find this place - Onsen Hot Pools. This was a pleasant stumble upon. A spacious private hot water bath at 38c with a automated roof top that opens up to rolling mountains and the gentle cool 6c weather outside – amazing.
8. Cobbs and Co.
A famous franchise in NZ… try their pork ribs! It’s to die for!
9. Horse riding along Shotover River, Queenstown
An easy ride down and into the valley overlooking The Remarkables, the famous Queenstown mountains. Especially beautiful in autumn with shades of orange and yellow amidst the blue skies.
10. Crayfish in Kaikoura
Fresh, succulent and tasty! Pack and go or stop and eat… either, but definitely something you should sink your teeth in!
11. Fat Dog Cafe in Rotorua
Our best breakfast in New Zealand just yet! Can’t say much about it, you just have to try it. Portions are huge.
12. Photography in Christchurch
Splendid architecture of old monuments and buildings awaits both the amateur and professional photographer. Wait for sunset to get excellent shots.
13. Cruising Milford Sound
Careening down huge boulders, it is somewhat eerie and majestic at the same time.
14. Sailing in Auckland
The city of sails is where you should indulge in this sport. You’d understand why sailing is so popular here.
15. Zorbing in Rotorua
Oodles of fun rolling down the hill in enormous plastic ball. Choose the one with water – it’s a 100 times better!
16. Climb Mt Tangariro
Even if you can’t do this… the National Park has awesome mountain views. Here’s where some parts of LOTR was filmed.
Half Baked!
